Singin' In the Rain. What can you say? Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, and Donald O'Conner acting their hearts out along with absolutely fabulous singing and dancing. This is largely considered the best musical of all time, and I would even go farther and say that this is one of the best movies period, regardless of genre. It's amazing.Arsenic and Old Lace. This is a classic. I love Cary Grant and his portrayal of Mortimer Brewster is one of the funniest things that I've ever seen. The movie is about a confirmed bachelor who finally gets married. He comes home to tell his aunts, only to discover that they're killing old men, whom they deem lonely, and burying them in their basement. Grant then has to devise a way to keep the police and his new bride from finding out about their activities, not to mention deal with his long lost brother who has returned and, to say the least, is not happy with him. Grant's performance alone makes this one of my favorite movies.The Cutting Edge. This is a story about an ex-hockey player and an ice-queen figure skater and the unlikely relationship that develops between them. This is a great movie with superb acting from both of the leads and the supporting cast. Plus, the skating scenes are so cool to watch, especially the finale. The Princess Bride. How can you describe this movie? Well, there's sword-fighting, kidnapping, true love, a great cast of characters, and Cary Elwes' dry wit. This movie is about Buttercup and her true love Wesley and everything that they must overcome to be together. This is one of the best movies ever filmed and I adore it.Reservoir Dogs. This was Quentin Tarantino's directorial and writing debut. If you like any of his other films, odds are that you'll enjoy this one too. I've always been a fan of Steve Buscemi, Harvey Keitel, and Chris Penn, and after seeing this movie I also became a fan of Tim Roth, who I had never really cared for before. It's a little violent, so it may not be to everyone's tastes, but if that doesn't bother you, I suggest that you rent it. It's worth watching for the Madonna speech alone.Four Weddings and a Funeral. This is one of the most perfect movies ever made. If you're a fan of British humor, you'll really get a kick out of it. Hugh Grant is wonderful as Charles, a Briton who falls in love with an American woman played by Andie MacDowell. Things just never turn out right for some reason, though. The movie is so hysterical with scenes where Grant is at a wedding and is seated with several of his ex-girlfriends and Rowan Atkinson as an extremely nervous priest. The dialogue is great, but you need to pay attention closely so nothing gets past you.A Fish Called Wanda. This movie has some of my favorite actors and one of my favorite actresses, namely John Cleese, Kevin Kline, Michael Palin, and Jaime Lee Curtis. This movie has been one of my favorites for years and my friends and I used to go around quoting it when we were in high school.The Professional. This is an action-packed film from director Luc Besson (the director of the movies The Fifth Element and La Femme Nikita who also happens to share my birthday), but it has a rare quality that many action films lack: heart. While the movie could stand alone with its intense action scenes, the ultimate reason that it's so good is because we fall in love with Leon and Mathilda. This movie is actually a movie about love and caring and how everyone needs somebody. This movie also has a great soundtrack including songs by Bjork and Sting.Twister. One of the coolest movies around! This one has it all from the spectacular effects to a pretty good plot line. I expected to go see this movie and be floored by how cool it looked, never expecting to actually like the story. I was very impressed.Shallow Grave. Excellent movie that deals with the question what would you really do for money? In this movie three flatmates find their new mate dead in his room with a suitcase full of money. They decide to get rid of the body by drawing straws for the dirty work, but this sets of some strange repercussions in one of their minds. Check this one out and try asking yourself what you would have done. Clerks. This is one of the best movies I've ever seen, bar none. This story basically follows the day in the life of two clerks, one of who works at a convenience store and the other who works at a video store. They discuss such interesting topics as Star Wars (all those poor independent contractors), sex (Thirty-seven?!), jobs, and just life in general. Take heed though, for those of you who offend easily, don't watch it.
