On May
1st 2001, Blinky the Uranium-mutated fish swam with his
friends to visit Melbourne's Uranium
mining companies
to demand an end to the mining
of Uranium.
See if you can find where Blinky is
hiding is this picture (answer at the bottom of the page):
Blinky's friends provided
lots of anti-nuclear activities.
There was drumming, singing, dancing and even an anti-nuclear play written by Dr Seuss: |
|
Even the police had a good time. Some decided to blockade WMC:
Then it was time for Blinky to swim to the stock exchange to make some new friends:
After meeting his new friends Blinky swam off to the next destination on his nuclear tour:
Through the police line . . .
. . . swimming over the traffic . . .
. . . arriving at Collins Place, the home of Rio Tinto - owner of Jabiluka and Ranger Uranium mines in Kakadu National Park:
Lots of people were not happy with Rio Tinto, including the unions who joined Blinky for a while:
Then Blinky and his friends did the long swim to Sedimentary Holdings, next to the Flagstaff Gardens. Sedimentary Holdings is trying to start the Honeymoon Uranium Mine in SA using in situ acid leach mining where acid is pumped into the ground to disolve the ore body. They are waiting for Government approval of their Environmental Impact Statement.
The police wouldn't let
Blinky's friend, the Anti-Nuclear Reactor, into Sedimentary Holdings.
Blinky thought of swimming to Heathgate Resources, the owner of the Beverley Uranium Mine in the Flinders Ranges. However, Adelaide was too far to swim to. After a long morning, Blinky and friends went to Flagstaff gardens for lunch and a nice rest. |

Did you find Blinky at WMC? He was hiding
behind the "Nuclear Industry a Flaming Disgrace" banner, below the "Riverside
Quay" road sign. (The banner is obscured by two women, one taking a photograph).
