I was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, during a tropical storm (that would be Agnes, if you're wondering), and to let some people tell it, I've been a terror ever since. When I was twelve I got shipped off to a boarding school, where I was supposed to be a nice little church boy studying way too much and trying to get into a good college. Well, I had the grades, but not the attitude, and they put me out.
Events following from that particular incident taught me to be a more independent person and more considerate about the feelings of others, and not the arrogant snob that I would have become had that not happened to me. OK OK, I'm still an arrogant snob, just less of what I would have been had I not had to face some, uh, adversity along the way. The same events also taught me what a total sham organised religion is as well. What a total scam they've got going on that front......
While I haven't had the material success which feeds the conspicuous consumption here in the United States, I have had more of life's experiences and collected more memories (good and bad) than the "average" person in their gated suburb will ever do. There is very little chance that I will wake up at the age of 40 and say "Damn, I wish I had (insert wistful longing here) when I was younger."
I am presently living in Washington, DC, working for an international law firm (its slogan is, in fact, "one law firm around the world"). It's cute, but it's only paying the bills and keeping me in the manner to which I've become accustomed.
I've been around the block a bit. I've lived/hung out/partied in Belgium, Canada, the Dominican Republic, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico, and the United Kingdom, among other places. Right now I look forward to my imminent return to southern Africa for a week of relaxation and shopping. Mmmm, shopping. Shopping is always good, especially when it's at almost ten rand to the dollar.
But Washington is only the latest place in a long series of cities in which I've lived. It might seem odd, but that expulsion from the aforementioned school started a chain of events which led me to move in the present Northeast US - Caribbean - Western European triangle that I can't seem to shake. Not that I'm trying to shake this cycle, mind you -- international travel is fun!!!!
I moved to Washington on Boxing Day (that's 26 December for US readers) 1998 after having lived in Birmingham, England (that's the original one!!!) for the previous 2½ years, during most of which time I was studying for my master's degree in European Studies with an emphasis on politics at a local university. However, largely because of financial woes (another recurring theme in my life) and because I got incredibly tired of finding out new and interesting ways how the United States government dabbled with other nations to contribute to the present instability in the world today, I walked away from the programme, but that's .... OK. I am fluent in French and Spanish, and I can speak Afrikaans, Dutch, and Italian with a little help. I really don't like Washington very much, and am only here for the money and low cost of living.
I do plan on settling down, however. When I am older and in a more stable financial position, oxalá, I will go into the classroom. Eventually I will get my teacher's certification and teach -- every place that I would seriously want to live has a large and growing black population, and not enough black teachers. Whether these children are noirs, zvarts, neri, schwartzen, negros, pretos or zvarten, they need more black role models, especially male ones..... who are NOT professional athletes. Mind you, there's nothing wrong with being a professional athlete... but still, let's be realistic. If I could afford to take the pay cut, I'd be in the classroom now.
Familywise, there's Mommie Dearest in Pennsylvania
(ok so her name is JoAnne...but trust me, that's close enuff!!), and my
pops, stepmom and younger siblings (1 brother, 2 sisters) in Alabama. My
brother Cedric is a graduate of the University
of Alabama, where he was a member of Omega
Psi Phi fraternity. In short, he's a Q-Dog, just like Pops. He uses
his EE degree to do nifty things for a company that has energy to serve
our world. My sister Toni is presently taking a break from the University
of Montevallo, and my sister Crystal is a freshman at UAB.
Contrary to the beliefs of some, my youngest sister and I are not twins.
That would be akin to calling me either 18 years old or calling her...an
age older than that.
