Reading Assignment - TBA

Activities

1. What is gravity?
Read the article about gravity and:
a). Write your own definition for gravity.
b). Determine your force of gravity on the earth (hint: Fgrav=m*g)
c). Check out the gravity simulation.

2. Did you know?
Sir Issac Newton, who published his laws of motion in 1687 in the monumental work Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy, had a fundamental belief that guided his work: "As below, so above". In other words, by understanding why objects move the way they do here on Earth, we should be able to understand the motions of the planets. Newton, therefore, studied motion in detail, making many new observations. His observations led him to derive three laws that govern the forces in our universe. For Issac, F describes the force acting (in our case gravity), m is the mass of any object (you for example), and a is its acceleration, (or attraction to the center of the earth). In the metric system, this unit of force is called a Newton, whose abbreviation is "N". A Newton is equal to 1 kgom/s2. In our English system, the unit of force is the pound; it is equal to 4.45 N.
a). Why did Newton study motion here on earth?

3. Three Types of Gravity.
This explanation separates gravity into three generally held views of gravity.
State them in your own words without using numbers. (Make certain you understand the third use.)

4. Keppler, Orbits & Gravity
a. Check out the orbits on this java applet.

5. Gravity and Tides.
Gravity here on earth has many effects on our planet. Ocean tides are created by the interaction of Earth's gravity interacting with the gravity from the Sun and Moon. Gravity, pulling in three directions at the same time, does strange things to our oceans.
a). Write a paragraph on how this effects our oceans and explain your reasoning behind your answer.

6. Poem - Read and comment on how light is used in common expression.

Lab - No lab this lesson.
