Summary

1. Discuss near-term and long-range goals, accomplishments, and projects that the library is engaged in or hopes to engage in as these relate to its depository operation. Discuss how current and projected library budgets, as they relate to depository operations, are estimated to impact depository operations.

Watson Library has accomplished the hiring of a new Documents Librarian after a lengthy national search. The current librarian began her duties on 1 July 1997.

In response to the growing number of documents issued on the Internet or on an electonic format, Watson Library is adding new personal computers which achieve or surpass GPO’s minimum standards. These machines will allow access to the Internet and government produced electronic products to all patrons. Future plans include a CD Lan reserved for government documents with a Windows NT server.

Watson Library is part of the state-wide LOUIS consortium which allows our local online catalog GENIE to be part of a large group of other catalogs which can be searched from all member locations as well as from many school and parish libraries. As part of this project, Watson library participated in a recon project for government documents which allowed all our government documents from 1976-1997 to be added to our catalog. These records were loaded in April of 1997. As part of the recon project, provisions are in place to encourage instruction in the use of these records.

Use this space to note any subjective comments about the general direction and progression of the library's depository operation.

Watson Library is moving toward a more electronic future involving more Internet access, information kiosks and multimedia integrated workstations. The place of government documents is acknowledged and accepted by the library administration. The library director is particularly sympathetic to all needs of all collections and departments of the library.

2. Add any comments or information deemed appropriate which has not been addressed.

As mentioned before, Watson Library has two branches, both of which receive a few government documents. The library at the Shreveport Nursing Center holds some government documents sent on request by the librarian there. These documents are reclassed into LC and added to that collection. When these documents are no longer needed by that library, the librarian returns them to Watson Library where they are either added to the Watson Library collection with the SuDocs number reinstated or placed on a offers list. The Leesville/Ft. Polk Library holds our ERIC microfiche (ED 1.310/2, ED1.310/3, ED 1.310/4) which are duplicates of ERIC microfiche purchased by Watson Library. It is understood that this branch has very limited space, so should it no longer be feasible for this location to receive these fiche, they would be returned to Watson Library.

Mini Self-Studies were not completed for these libraries because they are branches and fall under the purview of the Director of Watson Library.

Attach the complete documents department or library annual report(s), or portions of them relating to the library's depository operations, insofar as they are appropriate to release.

3. Do you wish an on-site inspection regardless of the evaluation of the self-study by LPS and the Regional?

Yes.

4. I certify that, to the best of my knowledge, the information provided in this self-study is accurate as of this date.
