Electronic Resources

Genie - an Online Public Access Catalog from which you can access book holdings in NSU Libraries. From the same terminals, you can access book holdings in other libraries which are part of the LOUIS consortium. Approximately 60% of NSU’s holdings are represented in Genie. This 60% includes all holdings 1995 - Present. For material older than 1995, please also consult the card catalog.

LOUIS Infoshare Databases - a group of indices to periodical literature available to all libraries in the LOUIS consortium. All databases have similar search enginges and may be searched by author, title and keyword.

GPO Silverplatter - A comprehensive index to U.S. Federal Government Publications using the Silverplatter search engine.

IAC Searchbank - a group of indices to periodical and newspaper literature in many fields of study. Includes full text of some citations. In IAC, you can search a subject guide, or do a keyword search. Try doing both types of searches using your terms and note the differences in the results and how they are presented.

Proquest - a database which allows searching of general periodical literature through the Proquest search engine. Includes journals and newspapers.

Internet - The Internet lab in Watson library is provided by the Student Government Association as a service to NSU affiliates only. Please sign up to use a computer. If you are unfamiliar with the Internet, you may sign up for a beginning Internet workshop. If you are familliar with the internet, but would like to learn more, you may sign up for an advanced workshop.

Reference material - Reference material shelved in the reference room of Watson Library is not available for circulation. However, you may make photocopies of this material.

Paper Indices/Resources - if you come to the library and find that the computer system is down, don’t think you have wasted your time coming in. We have plenty of paper resources to get your research started!

Biological and Agricultural Index - the paper counterpart of BIAG. This index is located on index table 4B and was discontinued in 1993.

Card Catalog - Use the card catalog when LOUIS is down or when you are looking for material prior to 1995. Also double check the card catalog in order to make sure you have covered all the bases.

General Science Index - the paper counterpart of GSCI located on index table 4A. We have a current subscription to this index.

Reader’s Guide to Periodical Literature - The paper counterpart to the Readers Guide we already talked about. Goes back to 1802 so it is great for historical research.

New York Times Index - an index specifically for the NYT which we have in Watson Library. 1851- 1940 of this index are shelved in the reference stacks. 1941 - current are shelved on index table 5B.
