WELCOME,MRS. BRACCIO'S CLASS!

Your job today is to compare and contrast the Navajo Long Walk and the Cherokee Trail of Tears. You have been studying the Navajo Long Walk.

Today we will use the Internet to find information about the Cherokee Trail of Tears. You will take notes on what you find, so that when you return to your classroom, you can compare and contrast the two events.

As you search for information, you will find that each page on the Internet has a certain type of address.

Here is a sample address (the technical name is URL, which stands for Universal Resource Locator.)

http://www.apple.com

Each URL begins with http (that tells the computer what kind of language is coming)

wwwstands for world wide web

The next part (apple) is a host name (sort of like the town or city)

The 3-letter tag is the domain: it tells what kind of site it is (com=commercialorg=organization

  edu=education)

Other parts of the URL refer to the path and the name of the file.

So,let's go searching!

1.Click on the following URL and follow the directions for Exercise 1 on your "e-paper"

http://www.Cherokee.navbar.org/history.htm

2.Now you will look at two sites that give a different type of information about the Cherokee Trail of Tears.

Go to the following site by clicking on the URL below.

http://users.townsqr.com/homebrew/trail.htm

When you get to this address, you will see a poem titled "Trail of Tears."

Read the poem aloud (softly)

Choose a line of the poem which you think best expresses the feelings of the poet about being forced away from home.

Copy that line in the box on your e-paper.

Now click on the next URL. You will find another poem.

Follow the same procedures as you did on the last poem

3.Your last task is to go searching yourself. We will use a search engine called "Yahoo."

Here's how you get there:

  • Type apple L
  • A box will open
  • In the box, type     http://www.yahoo.com
  • The Yahoo search site will ask you to type in a "search term."
  • Type in "Trail of Tears." (Use the quotation marks.)
  • Very soon, a page will appear with a list of sites that have to do with the "Trail of Tears.
  • Choose one of these sites that appeals to you.
  • Copy its URL (address) in the box on your paper.
  • On your paper, list two new facts you find on this web page about "The Trail of Tears."

I'll bet we're out of time by now. When you return to your classroom, you can compare your information and think about the ways the two events were the same and how they were different.

Thanks for coming to this site!

See you soon.
