Jacksonville State University
Writing Project
2000 Fact Sheet
As the Jacksonville State University Writing Project moves into its thirteenth year, we have 183 alumni of our Summer Institutes, and we believe these teachers are producing real changes in the way writing is taught in Northeast Alabama. With 183 alumni, we can conservatively estimate that over 10,000 children in 75 different schools in Northeast Alabama are being taught by these teachers every day.
Since many of these same JSU Writing Project alumni have been active presenters of inservice workshops over the years, we are certain that hundreds of teachers, whose students number many more thousands, have gained new insights about the use of writing for learning.
Major Accomplishments of 1999-2000
- Summer Institute 1999 Nine teachers participated in an intensive five-week study of the teaching of writing.
- Outreach Program - 35 workshops on the teaching of writing were
presented by our alumni, with over 2000 teachers attending.
- Conferences - The JSU Writing Project held a conference on the
teaching of writing and literature, with over 120 teachers attending.
- Newsletter - Twice-yearly, we published an 8-page newsletter on the
teaching of writing, featuring the professional writing of our Summer Institute
participants. This letter is sent to 3600 Alabama teachers, free of charge.
- Sampler Day - We invited teachers to come "sample" the
JSU Writing Project Summer Institute, in a full-day workshop.
- Continuity Program for Alumni - We held several meetings during the
school year and a summer refresher day for our own alumni.
