The Mobile Bay Writing Project
a program for South Alabama teachers
K-16, in all subjects
National Writing Project Background and Philosophy
To be a site of the National Writing Project stands for something. The Mobile Bay Writing Project (MBWP) is one of only four sites funded nationally in 1998. The MBWP promotes no single curriculum or methodology; it promotes teacher professionalism, teacher authority, and teacher power. It is based on the philosophy that:
- Programs designed to improve the teaching of writing must involve teachers at all teaching levels and in all subjects.
- Meaningful change happens over time and can best be accomplished by classroom teachers.
- Teachers of writing must write.
- Student writing can be improved by improving the teaching of writing and the best teacher of teachers is another teachers.
Mobile Bay Writing Project
The MBWP will begin this summer at the University of South Alabama. Its major features are:
- It's a teachers-teaching-teachers model. If you come to the Summer Institute, you will become a teacher consultant and conduct writing workshops for teachers in South Alabama.
- The five-week invitational institute will be open to K-university teachers in all subject areas. It will feature writing and responding groups, teacher demonstrations, and reading/discussion of current research and pedagogy in writing.
- Up to 16 teachers will be accepted for the first institute. The selection process is based on a combination of nominations, applications, and individual interviews.
