I suppose I'm echoing the words of a few million other Americans when I exclaim, "What the hell am I going to do with all this turkey?" Another quiet Thanksgiving with mom has come and gone. And I've got enough food to feed me until Christmas. I don't know what posessed my mother to buy a thirteen pound bird to feed just the two of us. About ten pounds of it is sitting in my fridge right now, waiting for the annual ritual of picking to wear it down to a plate of bones. Eventually. I've also got back most of the potato salad I brought, a bucket of mom's somen salad, another bucket of mashed potatoes, another bucket of stuffing, and to top it all off, a plate of sushi, broccoli, Jell-O and a cob of corn. (We ate all the sashimi in half an hour. The wine was gone by nine.) Ah, just another holiday in Hawai`i. Where else could you serve raw fish next to cranberries, or stir some turkey into your Japanese noodles? |
