I ka Po`alima, hana au i ka ho`ike i ko`u papa `olelo Hawai`i. Pa`akiki ka ho`ike. Maluhiluhi loa au, aka ho`opa`a ha`awina au i ko`u puke `olelo i keia ahiahi. (On Thursday, I have a test in Hawaiian language class. The test is difficult. I am very tired, but I will study my language book tonight.) Hmm. Not bad for a beginner. Midterms. I'm finding solace in the fact that there are others in the course that are less prepared than I am. Last week one student transferred into my class because he was struggling in another section, but now he just sits in the corner, pulls out his hair and swears to himself. I know it isn't nice to draw happiness from the inadequacies of others, but sometimes there isn't much else to cling to. I mean, I know I'm going to totally bomb on numbers. For some strange reason bits of high school Japanese (san! kyujuni!) and German (Zwei! Funfundviersig!) keep jumping out of my mouth instead of Hawaiian (`Ekahi! `Ehiku!). The survivors, at least, will get to celebrate on Friday with a party. Being the skilled cook that I am, I've volunteered to bring canned juice.
I've discovered one thing to look forward to on Wednesdays, but They still make you suffer before you can enjoy it. Every Wednesday, Marriott sets up a tent by Kuykendall Hall where they sell plate lunches that are tastier -- though not by much -- than the flavored cardboard you get everywhere else on campus. Shoyu chicken, teriyaki steak (with real slabs of cow, instead of what they usually pass off as meat), and other assorted delicacies. What sucks is that everyone seems to have found out about it before I did. Today I decided to give it a try, and had to stand in a line that went straight into the next building. Pricey -- about seven bucks -- but if it's a choice between that and paying $2.59 for an "Extreme Combo 3" at Taco Hell that keeps me content for maybe an hour? I'll take the big-ass heart attack in the styrofoam box, please.
Journey's "Trial By Fire" will be released Oct. 22. The single I heard on the radio is "Message of Love." In addition to the new album, they're remastering "Escape." (When all else fails, USENET to the rescue!) I guess I wasn't kidding when I talked about the 80s being in vogue again, either. There's new stuff out by Firehouse, Warrant, Van Halen... Can you tell I used to dress all in black -- jeans-and-flannel -- and wear boots when I was in high school? My musical tastes have broadened considerably since, I promise. For example, did you know "They Might Be Giants" just put out a new album? I've got to get it, at the very least because there's a song on it titled "XTC vs. Adam Ant."
Tomorrow, I swear, I will drop the accursed class, or may Death (or the Republican party) take me. |
