Desktop Icon Manager for Windows 95/NT (Version 2.0) -------------------------------------- By Micah Leiff Nutt (mlnutt@accessone.com) Credits: Special thanks to Tom Ramsdell for helping implement the NT code. [ This page was edited by The Starman to clarify some of the statements but primarily to mention that I added the PGP-signature files to the distribution. I tried many times to contact the program's author to discuss changes with him; but couldn't reach him! T.S. 19 AUG 99.] Program Name: iconmgr.exe =========== Function: ======== The Desktop Icon Manager allows the user to save and restore the positions of the Desktop Icons. Right click the Desktop Icon Manager's tray icon to activate. Features: ======== User defined HotKeys for the popup menu, save icons, restore icons, and hide icons. Automatic restoration of icons' positions when the video mode is switched. User selectable "Auto-restore on startup" and "auto-save on exit" options. Optional installation as a Tray item. If the user selects to NOT run the program as a Tray item AND no hotkey is defined for the popup menu, then the default hotkey sequence of "Ctrl + Alt + F1" will be assigned to the popup menu. Ability to Hide/UnHide the desktop icons. Note that you CAN hide the desktop icons and then exit the program -- leaving the icons hidden. This is not a bug; it was implemented intentionally. (Hiding the icons de-'selects' any desktop icons which were "highlighted" so they will not be selected when the icons are unhidden.) Two command line parameters are implemented. "-s" which will save the Desktop Icons' positions and "-r" which will restore the Desktop Icon's positions. The program will exit, without loading, immediately after saving or restoring. LEFT-clicking the Desktop Icon Manager's tray Icon will enable or DISABLE the use of defined hotkeys AND the automatic restoration of icons upon video mode change. (Note: the tray icon's screen color will change from blue to black when disabled!) The Desktop Icon Manager creates "iconmgr.ini" in the Windows folder; this file contains the Desktop's Icon information for ANY saved screen resolutions and also contains the settings for "iconmgr.exe" -- a tempory file "mmf?.tmp" is also created in the TEMP directory. Known Bugs: ========== IF the icons are hidden AND then you change either the Desktop's "pattern" or Wallpaper, WINDOWS will NOT repaint the Desktop properly when you move icons or 'windows' around. Disclaimer: ---------- You use the Desktop Icon Manager at your own risk. By choosing to run the program you take responsibility for any adverse effects that the program might cause.
