Saint Nicholas sites and parishes of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church is divided between the Kiev Patriarchate and the Autocephalous churches. Dislocations such as these are unfortunately common during times of political upheaval.

Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the United States of America

The official site of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the United States of America (UOCUSA). The UOCUSA is under the spiritual guidance of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, not the Patriarch of Kiev (much the same as the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America is not under the Archbishop of Athens, but under the Ecumenical Patriarch.)

Ukrainian Christmas Traditions

How the holiday is celebrated in Ukraine. Find out why the Ukrainians honor Christmas in January instead of December. OK, I'll tell you. Many Orthodox churches use the ancient Julian calendar (or "church calendar") for the calculation of the date. This calendar is currently 13 days behind the common Gregorian civil calendar. Thus Christmas is celebrated in fact on December 25 -- on the Julian calendar, which is January 6 on the civil calendar.
