I was tontured a reader in June 1996 by Vicar Bishop Paul of Zaraisk, Mos ow Patriarchate. Even though our parish is under the Russian Patriarch, there are only two parish members of Russian heritage; most active members being Americans of Orthodox heritage, or converts. The majority of the ethnic parish members are Macedonian nd Serb. Our priest is also a convert from the Anglican (Episcopal) Church were he served for twenty-five years. This May past he celebrated twenty-five years as an Orthodox priest. On Sunday, I arrive early to prepare for Divine Liturgy and to say the Ho rs. There is nowhere else in the whole world where I would rather be, or anything else I would rather be doing. I am always so sad when Liturgy ends and I have to go back to the world. I am 50 years old, have been married for 28 years, and have three children, none of whom is Orthodox. My twenty-one year old daughter, who was baptised only nine months ago in a Protestant denomination, went on a missions trip to Uganda during May and art of June. It was a very enriching experience for her, one she will never forget. What I gained from it was a vicarious hint of the joy and satisfaction some people derive from missions work, and the need to support missions activity, even though our pa ish needs service books, and other materials. I was tempted to minimally support the work of the group my daughter was affiliated with since they take very little for administrative costs, and almost all donations go to actual support for orphans. But I w s reluctant to support a Protestant-based group, and wanted to help spred the true teachings of the "real" Church. Perhaps you can supply me with some basic liturature regarding cost-efficient Orthodox missions activities. I hope to hear from you soon. |
