The Cherokee Syllabary (also called the Cherokee Alphabet) was developed by Sequoya. Sequoya was a Cherokee who became fascinated with the white people's way of communicating by writing. He decided to invent a system of writing for his own people. He ompleted it in 1821 after 12 years of work. Sequoya's chief goal was to permanently record ancient tribal culture, using the syllabary. The Cherokee also used his system to publish books and newspapers in their own language.
