Realistic Painting (suggested grades 9 through 12)

Objectives

The students will: 1) choose a subject to paint, 2) mix acrylic paints to develop colors needed, 3) construct a painting that looks like their chosen subject

Tie-in's: Francisco Goya, Rosa Bonheur, Edouard Manet

Art History Questions

What period of art do these paintings come from? Who did the work? What social changes and inventions had an effect on art in this time period?

Criticism Questions

How do each of the paintings effect you? Why? Does each painting show balance? Why or why not? Is each composition interesting? Why or why not? Do the colors used in each painting work well together? Why or why not?

Aesthetic Questions

What do you like about each painting? Why? What do you dislike about each painting? Why?

Project

A realistic acrylic painting of the student's choice.

Time line: 7 days

Student Materials

canvas board, paints: blue, red, yellow, white, brown, etc., brushes of various shapes, newspapers, paper towels, water and cups

Teacher Materials

same as above for painting demonstration, visual aids (pictures of works by Francisco Goya, Rosa Bonheur, Edouard Manet)

Review Questions

What was Realism? When did it occur? What social events and inventions occurred during that time? How did it effect art? Who was Francisco Goya? Name at least one of his works. Who was Rosa Bonheur? Name at least one of her works. Who was Edouard Manet? Name at least one of his works.
