1) The students will: 1) cut along lines to cut out strips of paper; 2) glue paper, dried beans and yarn to paper; 3) compare two or more masks from different cultures
1) Students--scissors, glue, paper plates, paper, dried beans, yarn, popscicle sticks, crayons, any other materials that would led themselves to the project 2) Teacher--two or more pictures of native masks (Native American, African, Pacific Islands, etc.), a finished mask to use as an example, materials to make a demonstration mask
Who has worn a mask before? Why? Today we will look at some masks, and make our own.
Show and discuss the mask pictures (who the masks were made by and what they were used for). Compare the masks (what makes them alike, what makes them different, contrast the colors and designs). Model making a mask.
Monitor while students make their masks.
Ask: What is a mask? What types of masks did we discuss today? How did we make our masks?
The students will be evaluated through questions and their finished projects.
