The students will: 1) tell or write about what prehistoric living conditions were like and how that influenced art at that time, (2) tell or write general information on cave painting and prehistoric sculpture, (3) tell or write what happened in art when villages began to form, (4) will demonstrate a general knowledge of pottery, and of using the coil method to create pottery.
Tie-in's: Lascaux, France; Bison Licking It's Flank from La Madeleine, France; Neolithic pottery from around the world; other prehistoric art resources that are available.
Compare and contrast painting 20,000 years ago to painting today. Compare and contrast sculpture 20,000 years ago to painting today. Compare and contrast pottery 8,000 years ago to pottery today.
Compare and contrast prehistoric composition with modern ideas of composition. Were prehistoric artists concerned with composing their paintings? Why or why not? Why isn't much pottery found from this period?
Does the composition of cave paintings bother you? Why or why not? Would you rather have a "primitive" sculpture in your home, or a Michelangelo? Why? Is prehistoric pottery art? Why or why not?
herdsmen, ochre, charcoal, wedging, slip, score, coil, earthen ware, green ware

Why was most prehistoric art about animals and hunting? What possible way did cave painting start? What materials were used? What possible way did sculpture begin? Who were prehistoric artists? Why/how did people start settling in villages? What other art areas originated during this time? How did they make pottery? What was it used for? Who still creates Stone Age type art today? What can we learn from them?
