The students will: 1) tell or write about what Pointillism is, (2) be able to recognize George Seurat's style, (3) will create a pointillism style painting .
How is Seurat's work both creative and scientific? Compare and contrast Seurat's work with Renaissance painting. Compare and contrast Seurat's work with Abstract painting. Compare and contrast Seurat's work with mosaics.
Why are George Seurat's paintings interesting to the viewer? Some think Seurat's pointillism style is "impersonal". Do you feel this way? Why or why not?
How does Seurat's subjects in his paintings relate to other paintings by other artists of that time? How effective is pointillism in portraying subjects and feeling?
Impressionism, Post Impressionism, Pointillism, complementary colors, George Seurat
Students will create a simple "pointillism" type painting by using cotton swabs. (They may pencil in their composition for a guide line for their painting.)
Time line: 5 to 6 days
pencil, watercolors, 4" x 6" drawing paper, cotton swabs, water cups
handouts about George Seurat for the students (most of my handout was taken from the November 1991 issue of Art News, so you can look there--if you want a copy of the whole handout e-mail me, and arrange for me to "snail-mail" it to you), Seurat reproductions, magnifying glass, videos pertaining to George Seurat, materials to make a demonstration project
What is Pointillism? Why is George Seurat's work "Post Impressionism" instead of "Impressionism"? Was color Seurat's only interest?
