McKinney, Texas Depot 1960

This photograph was taken in front of the McKinney Depot on a Cub Scout visit in 1960 by my grandmother, Thelma Cole. The man standing in the doorway is my grandfather, Thomas Harrington Cole. Harrington Cole, as he was known, was the telegraph agent for the Southern Pacific Railroad. The tan car, as I remember, belonged to Watson (Mac) and Jan McCreary. The white 1959 Chevy Bel Air belonged to my grandparents. I think the other Chevy belonged to Andy Lazarene.
Operating the Telegraph
In this photo my grandfather, T. H. Cole shows us how to operate the telegraph. He is sending and receiving a message from another operator in Denison, Texas. You could say that telegraph was the first form of telecommunication, the first Internet. I am the cub scout standing in the background.
