Anne Frank
Anne Frank is a typical Jewish girl in W.W.II, when Hitler takes over part of the world. Her family, another family, and an elderly man all went into hiding in an attic. After 2.5 years, they were captured and killed.
I came to the United States from Mexico one day on a truck with my family. It was pretty scary, because one morning, early, real early, my parents gently woke my younger brother and me. They told us to pack our belongings quietly and quickly. We had a little help from our parents, just to make things go a little faster. Before I knew it, we were all bustled out the door, and onto a deserted street corner. We waited in the cold, bundled in warm jackets, for a seemingly long fifteen minutes. Then, in the distance, I heard a muted, low rumbling. As the sound came closer, I identified it as an old, dusty, beat up blue pickup truck. It pulled up and stopped right in front of us.
"Where are we going, Mama?" I remember asking, while gently tugging on my mom's plain brown dress.
"Shhhh, little one, be still. I will tell you soon, very soon."
She then squeezed her dark brown eyes shut for a split second, so quickly, I wasn't even sure if it was there at all. When she opened them, there was a look of newly-let-out hope. She smiled down at me, and I returned her smile.
Meanwhile, a Mexican man with very intriguing and knowing eyes popped his head out of the truck window. He was speaking in low tones with my dad. I couldn't understand what he was saying, but then I saw my dad pass a small (but I'm sure costly) wad of money to the man. My dad hurried us, along with mother, Into the back of the covered truck, and we started down the road.
It's hard to remember what happened, because I was just a little kid back then. My beautiful mother was caught by the Immigration police when she was out shopping one morning. She was taken back to Mexico. Neither I nor any of my family has seen her since. That was when we had been in the United States for three years. We are full citizens now. I was five and a half years old when we left for the United States. I am fourteen years old now and I'm in the eighth grade.
My family and I were in hiding for seven years, a very long hard seven years. It seemed that every moment we seemed apprehensive, scared that the border police would come storming in and haul us all back to Mexico. The only good thing about that would be that maybe I could see my mother again. I still think about her sometimes. I have a heart locket with a picture of her holding me as a baby sealed away inside.
After my mom got deported, my dad was even more cautious about going outside, but we had to have food. With luck, my father didn't get caught when he was out.
We were also afraid to use the car and go on main roads. If we did something wrong, or got into an accident and got pulled over...we would get deported also.
Trust was entirely another issue. My father had a few friends-too few-one or two people out of all that we've seen. I'm sure that many people would be honest and keep our secret, but we weren't willing to take that chance-it was too risky.
This story relates to the Diary of Anne Frank in many ways. On one hand, Anne, her parents, Peter and his, and Mr. Drussel were all hidden for about two and a half years. My story family was hidden away for seven. Different lengths of time, but in a way they were the same kind of conditions. Both families were running away from people who were trying to deport them or kill them.
In Anne's case, setting foot outside in the streets could mean the end of her life. If the family I created were to go out on the streets, and the Police found out that they weren't citizens, and still they would only get escorted back to Mexico, not killed.
During the day, when people were working in the office below, the Franks, the Van Daans, and Mr Drussel had to be mouse quiet. That way, the workers couldn't hear them. The Mexican family didn't have to worry about that. People could know that they were there, but not were they came from or why they were there.
Some of the differences were that illegal immigration still happens today and the numbers are increasing. Anne Frank's predicament only happened in Hitler's reign and in the war he caused. Hopefully, that will never happen again in our history.
Anne thought that someday, in the future, people and humanity will learn to endure and cherish life--that someday maybe we will all realize.
