You nailed it. Gimick-Age, etc. I've been driven to silver age issues. I also can't take computer coloring- all photoshopped and "airbrushed" to death! Flat colors on black inks- and zip tone, that's where it was at! Drawings where strong as PATTERNS on a

I liked your web page. It is a very good introduction for those just getting into comics or who have just found an interest in the rich history of comics. I own a comics store in Northern NJ and we are currently working on a timeline of comics. Of rece
t interest to me is the Platinum Age (?-1932). There have been many great advances in the research for this era, especially as many begin to refine and even redefine the term "comics." I would also like to have a history of comics on my store web-site,
ut something more along the lines of a serious study of comics as an essential part of our culture (hey, even if a person has never read a comic book, they sure as hell still know Batman, Superman, etc.). Many important non-superhero comics were printed
uring the Atom Age (1948-1956); this was an age where every genre (except super heroes) was tried and had a great degree of success. There is also a huge volume of comics from the late 50's through today: the undergrounds. This is a difficult corner of
omics to read and research because of the dirth of material and the difficulty in finding it (outside of Crumb, Williams, etc.). The list goes on and on to include comic strips and even comics from around the world (especially Europe and of course the cu
rent Japanese "invasion"). I also believe the whole Heroes World fiasco didn't occur until 1994 (Heroes World was a distributor centered in Northwest NJ whom Marvel purchased in order to distribute their comics exclusively to the world-a move that failed
miserably and further disrupted the comics world). If you need help with any research I'd be ahppy to help-I have tons of books and materials that deal with comics, their history and the people who created them. I also have tons of reprint collections a

Terrific overview of superhero comics. I've been a student of American comic book history for a long time and I still learned things I never knew from your webpage!
P.S. I know there was no mention of the 60's Batman T.V. show but I would like to say that it always hurt me inside to think that the majority of people in the public sector would come to think that the show's depiction was what Batman was really about (
nd again with some of the movies). At least the animated series brought back the feeling of Bob Kane's original creation: A story of a boy traumatized by the death of his parents (which could realistically happen) who is later driven by a dark obsession
to become a vigilante-a night creature who exacts vengence on criminals so that others would not suffer his fate.

The web page is very well done; I just wanted to thank you for including the Senate report on comics and juvenile delinquency on the page--you saved me a trip to the Library of Congress. I noticed from the other entries in your guestbook that a lot of new
r readers are checking out this page--I'm glad that they are presented with this opportunity to learn about the censorship movement of the fifties and the effect that Dr Wertham's book, the Senate hearings, and the creation of the CCA had on the industry.

Jamie - I am not sure that Marston got the idea only from Montagu. He himself had done a book called The Emotions of Normal People in which he identified four major psychological types. One type (Influencer/Expressive) was almost exclusive to sorority w
men he observed at Vassar - a very positive type of power that was warm and friendly compared with the more distant and coercive style he observed in men. He would surely agree with Montagu. See the DISC personality instrument based on his research.

I just have one comment. I know you are a Punisher Fan, but did you really LIKE the movie?? I thought it was AWFUL! I mean, how can the Punisher not have a Skull on his chest? That was his way of getting bad guys to shoot at him, giving him an EXCUSE to k
ll them! Not only that, but the movie made him look like a cop, not a mercenary turned vigilante. My favaorite Punisher stories were all the original appearances in Amazing Spider-Man, up to #202, and Annual 15. Also, the First mini-series was GREAT!

I had to drop you a line to let you know how much I enjoyed reading your history of comics. I was always a Marvel boy so there were several things in there that I didn't know, particularly regarding the DC continuity stuff and the Golden and Silver Ages.
I gave up on comics for ages and have recently started buying them again - fortunately, the comics I like (70s Marvels mainly) are not in very high demand so they are pretty cheap - in England at any rate.
I have mixed feelings about current Marvels. The reproduction quality is great but some of the stories are a bit too "gosh! wow!" for my liking. And I refuse to buy any of the ten thousand X- and spider-books available. In fact, I stopped collecting Spide
-Man with the death of Gwen Stacy. It really upset me at the age of eleven!
