Don't expect any swooning, winsome heroine lying in wait for her dashing hero though ( except maybe for a certain lady in the Black Moth ). Far from it - the ladies are more likely to be incredibly plucky and resourceful ( much to the men's consternation ). On this count, Mary Challoner is one of my favourite characters. Even in the face of the most daunting adversities, Miss Challoner faces it with a calm, sensible head, never once losing her cool.
Though Georgette Heyer's novels might have loads of action, mystery, comedy and more than a little satire, there is no doubt that the core of the story is the romance. And where would a romance be without a pair of star-crossed lovers.
