A few words on taste and design
Popular mistakes of new page owners:
Adding way too many pictures on his/her page.
Rehashing an old tired topic.
Use impossible backgrounds.
Go javascript crazy.
Do not give us a reason to care.
Adding way too many pictures.
Never forget that the reason we are at your page is to see what you have to say, and NOT what you pulled out of online archives. Pictures take a long time to load, so try to keep the picture to an absolute minimum, and use only the ones that actually pertain to you and your topic.
Rehashing an old tired topic.
Examples: Star Trek, poetry sites, boring autobiographies, or your favorite band.
Of course, its perfectly okay to add these to your page, but keep away from making them your soul theme. Try to discuss something not everybody knows, but might actually be interested in. Try a sport, an in depth look at your favorite novel, or humor. Anything you have to offer that is unique.
Use impossible backgrounds
Please, for the sanity of your viewers, look at your page after having added a background and make sure the text is readable. No matter how cool it looks, it still gives your viewers a headache. The best backgrounds are either solid colors, or very muted images, like below...
Go javascript crazy
Most javascripts just make your page look cute, and don't really do anything useful. They, like pictures, take time to load, and make your page somewhat cumbersome. Don't use them unless you REALLY REALLY have to. One cutsy script per page is okay.
Do not give us a reason to care
The world is not there to see the generic home page, it is there to share information. Its great if you have a page dedicated to your stats, but for everyone's sake, don't make it your main page. Ask yourself, would a complete stranger care?
