This is the site of the first real-time radio station on theInternet. This page explains how to connect, what software youwill need and gives broadcast details. You can pick up thesoftware by FTP at this site. Reception quality is dependent on anumber of factors, particularly the system demand. If the signalis bad, try later, preferably not in US peak hours. If you have afast connection, you can listen to the music as background whileyou go about your other tasks, even surfing to other sites.

There's the optionto use RealAudio 2.0 or 1.0. This is a truly wonderful site, fullof warmth, nostalgia and American post-war homespun homiliy. Getyour kids to listen. It's still great.

Just click on the picture of aradio, select the button you want and it displays a list ofstations (mostly North American) to tune into. Categories includeRock, Sports, Talk, Theatre, Church and Other Music. Select astation and zap! you can tune in live (with the help of RealAudio2.0, which is downloadable from this site).

Pirate radio on the Internet? Just one thing - the DTIcouldn't care less. It's not illegal, but big shout going out allthe same. Broadcasting the sounds of the London underground (notthe Tube, silly) the first Sunday in every month, Gaia Radio isthe loud and keep-it-locked shouty progeny of The Shamen's scaryfrontman, Mr C. Showcasing the drum 'n' bass talents of DJ Red,DJ Rap and a promised performance from Goldie and his Metalheadz,most of the time the site is a source of dance music informationwith essays on the history, the drugs and various other aspectsof dance culture. Once a month it comes alive. Give it a listen.

Broadcasting exclusively to anyone livingwithin a stone's throw of Brookside, the site lets you look atthe schedules, email a presenter and enter a Virgin competition.Not massively innovative and yet to start utilising the RealAudio software it urges you to download, but it does the job.

Yah-boo-sucks to snotty Radio 3 listeners, this is a simplepresence from the scene-stealing classical music station, ClassicFM. Full of the kind of information that listeners usually swampthe switchboard for Ü what frequency to tune to, who is on when,times to listen out for particular programmes and follow-upinformation Ü this fields almost all enquiries, with theexception of what music has been broadcast and the Classic FMcharts. Tastefully presented but ultimately unfulfilling. Still,you can email Henry Kelly's Joie de Vivre (whatever that is...)which, after all, is a bit of a bonus.

TST gets a mention because it's a company supplyingsubscription radio, and making special interest sports, news andconsumer shows available over the Internet. You mean pay money tohear some loudmouthed American jock spouting things you couldn'tcare less about? Yup, there's no suggestion that anyone wouldactually find anything of interest here to listen to or, for thatmatter, that anyone actually wants talkshows on demand. In fact,arguably, one of the strengths of radio is its 'liveness' and thecommunity of listeners that implies. So this is really just apoint of information in the ongoing Internet v traditional mediawars. Read and then destroy.

A super little site for testing out your RealAudio. There aresome sweet little clips of classic radio, including a Dr Pepperad and a sketch from The Jimmy Durante show, The Voice of Americaand a text-to-speech demonstration. It's not like listening tothe 'real' radio but quite diverting all the same.

The nauseous nattering fostered by local radio phone-ins getsless of an airing here than in the actual programmes themselves,and the station's commitment to better communication with itsWest Country audience is kind of worthy in itself. You canrequest dedications in the Late Night Love show and vote on thisweek's top tracks. But, if you ask me, any radio station with theslogan 'No rap - less chat' should get with the program prettydamn fast.
