Australian Cricket

http://www.physics.su.oz.au/~mar/cricket.html
Don't despair at the domination of American sports on the Internet, frolic here and know that there'll always be an England. Someone's got to be bottom of the international cricket ladder.

Wimbledon FC

http://www.cs.ucl.ac.uk/students/A.Stubbs/wfcgraph.html
Compiled by Andy Stubbs, the Wimbledon Web site adopts the 'there's nobody like us, but we don't care' attitude. A larger than life Womble greets you upon arrival. Unfortunately, he's been there for a while and the site won't be updated until October so you have to relive The Crazy Gang's 1995/96 season all over again, or visit John's Wimbledon page at www.soi.city.ac.uk/homes/ec564/dons.top.html for a simplified series of pages.
Top of Page |

West Ham United FC

http://www.dungeon.com/~express/whu.html
This new and regularly updated West Ham site is one of the only sites in the Premiership to give you an option to download the entire site if your modem is too slow to view it online. There's a host of information including a tribute to the late Bobby Moore and sound clips from his recollections of that final.
Top of Page |

Tottenham Hotspurs FC

http://www.sys.uea.ac.uk/recreation/sport/thfc/thfc.html
With enough football trivia to keep even Stato happy, the Spurs site provides information overload on the happenings at White Hart Lane. A collection of sound clips give particular emphasis to the Nayim goal against Arsenal, which by all accounts was a stunned silence. Anyone who has spent the summer in solitary confinement might also like to catch up with Teddy Sheringham on his Euro site at www.i-way.co.uk/ euroted/.
Top of Page |

The Warwickshire

http://www.waverider.co.uk/~wwshire/
Someone once described Golf as 'a good walk ruined'. If you disagree and want to visit one of the most beautiful golf courses in the country, go take a peek at The Warwickshire sited at Leek Wootton, near Warwick. The site is simply designed, with details on how to get to the course, the facilities therein, upcoming events and local accommodation. This is little more than a promotional brochure on the Web.
Top of Page |

The S Files

http://www.keeper.co.uk/senna/s-files/
Apparently many of the details surrounding the death of Ayrton Senna are still unexplained and two years have gone by without an official verdict on his death. This is great conspiracy stuff and according to the site many of the people involved are reported to be in 'fear of their lives'. No real answers here but a plea to people to email in their theories.

The Ringside Insider

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/rossm
The famous french essayist and semiotician Roland Barthes once wrote that Wrestling is not a sport, it is a spectacle, which roughly translates as wrestling is about over-muscled meathead chumps with spangly stars and stripes capes and bad hair. But your granny probably loves it and is at her happiest when watching a gruesome jaw-crushing headlock performed by a man in lime green pants. Ross Marshall is mad for it as well. His highly detailed, up-to-date pages reveal a sophistication not immediately evident in a 'sport' or spectacle best known by kids as BUNDLE!. Regular reports on WCW and WWF are accompanied by Q&As on wrestling's top stars. It needs a few more pictures as it's largely text-based but that's a minor point. On the whole, it is a highly entertaining read. Now , whatever happened to Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks and, of course, Roland Barthes?

The National Rounders Association

http://rounders.punters.co.uk
The game beloved of school children up and down the country and the forerunner to baseball. This is the official site for the National Rounders Association. If you thought rounders was restricted to schools think again. This site talks proudly of the national championships, international matches, and how the game is growing in popularity amongst adults, alongside softball. There are also contact details for all the known leagues in the country. So now there's no excuse. Pick up your bat and old PEkit and get rounding!

The Ipswich Town VRML Site

http://www.sys.uea.ac.uk/recreation/sport/itfc/
So you have either a VRML Web browser or a browser that supports VRML and you're off, scooting into cyberspace, zooming like a ball that's been drop-kicked over a football ground, down into Ipswich's Portman Road. However, it's more interesting for those that study Virtual Reality Modelling Language than for your average Ipswich fan and let's hope it's some student project, otherwise it'd be a complete waste of time.

The Boxing Career of Dickie O'Sullivan

http://ourworld.compuserve.com:80/homepages/Peter_OSullivan/
This is an enormously touching tribute from a son to his father. At just over 5ft, Dickie O'Sullivan was a tenacious shortstop flyweight, fighting in the mid-40s and early 50s, who earned a reputation for being a terrier in the boxing ring and so got given the nickname the Toy Bulldog. His son Peter has collected together a record of all his fights, along with press cuttings and photos, and he is also looking for anyone who might have once fought his dad. Dickie himself would like to relive old times and Peter wants to able to add more material to his online scrapbook and mementoes. This is a very touching and personal piece of sporting history.

Surfcall

http://www.tis.co.uk/tis/surfcall/index.htm
As an advert for Surfcall's premium rate phone and fax forecast reports from around the UK's surfing hotspots this is fine. As somewhere to find out about fun holiday destinations and where the surf's up then this is a complete waste of time. Obviously Surfcall provides a useful commercial service and one it can ill afford to provide online, but given the choice between getting the number out of a directory or using the Web site, I'd say it's the directory every time.

Sunderland AFC

http://www.sunderland-afc.com
Impressed, you will be by the official Sunderland site. It was the first official site in the country, and by co-operating with Bob Graham's 'History of Sunderland' book, this site has managed to create a staggering history of the club from 1890/91 to the present day. The whole site is fast, well-crafted with an eye for detail. You can also get to the site via the ambitious and fascinating virtual city of Sunderland project at www.sunderland.com.

SumoWeb!

http://www-bcf.usc.edu/~tmccarth/sumo.htm
A superbly designed and appropriately dignified site for all fans who get a kick out of watching a couple of cross-looking, lardy Japanese blokes engaged in mortal combat. Although there is a glossary and a page of rules, the main bulk of information assumes a certain familiarity with the sport. At once simple and yet enormously complex - go Sumo.

Stevenage Borough FC

http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/square/aaa33/index.htm
As a team you may have dismissed Stevenage Borough FC as a minor GM Vauxhall Conference affair - 11 lads from a sad southern new town most noted for a leisure centre named after Gordon Craig (Ed...who?). But from Borough's perky Hertfordshire supporters comes this unofficial team site which is testimony to a passion, an obsession, an unlived dream, a full admission of 'it's taken over my life'. Superb match reports plus hard fought and won arguments about games and players. Anyone thinking of setting up a site for their own team should check this first! See also the excellent Subbuteo icons. Boro's fans, at least, are a winning combination.
Top of Page |

Speed - the online motor sport magazine

http://ds.dial.pipex.com/speed/
Speed is a Web-only motorsport magazine, for those of you who get excited at the thought of pit stops, grids and pole positions. The site boasts contributors from paper-based magazines such as Autosport and Motoring News. At the moment, the site is still finding its feet but it plans to include the best in writing and photography. Keep an eye on Speed.

Southampton FC

http://www.soton.ac.uk/~saints/
A new manager and a new look Web site for Southampton. Point your sainted browser there for nine action archives and memorable movie moments from the McMenemy era and one or two from the boy Le Tissier.
Top of Page |

Sheffield Wednesday FC

http://www.crg.cs.nott.ac.uk/Users/anb/Football/index.html
Our trip to the Wednesday site was marred by technical hitches - the machine that gathers the information for the site suffered from a dodgy hard disk. When it's in full-flow the site is home to an abundance of match facts including the results of every game the Owls have ever played. You can also visit Barmy Army Online at www.geocities.com/Colosseum/2938/ but you won't find a great deal more on offer.
Top of Page |

Robot Wars

http://robotwars.com/rwi/
Invented for people who never quite grew out of Meccano by a guy who wanted to make vacuum cleaning a spectator sport (seriously!), Robot Wars features radio-controlled models trying to rip each other to pieces with blades, saws and drills. The third annual contest takes place on 16 August in, you guessed it, the USA. Check out photos of past competitors with names like The Master and La Machine but try not to hurt yourself laughing as all would have been rejected by the producers of Mad Max for looking too ridiculous. Saddos actually go along to watch and, by the looks of things, also purchase taste-free merchandise online. Don't!
Top of Page |

Planet Soccer

http://web-usa.com/soccer/
A great-looking US-based site that includes links to football sites around the world. There are several well-written features, including one on American attitudes to soccer, plus links to the history of football and official rules sites. This is a good place to start any trawl around footie on the Net. I hate it when they call it soccer though !
Top of Page |

Nottingham Forest FC

http://unix.ccc.nottingham.ac.uk/~ccznffc/NFFC.html
'To be perfectly Frank' is the unofficial Nottingham Forest site and to be perfectly frank, it's no great shakes. This site is home to a rather sparsely populated forest, with information and innovation low on the agenda. But it's worth looking out for Steve Stone modelling the home kit for 1996/97 - undoubtedly a bold step for any Web Master to take.
Top of Page |

Newcastle United FC

http://alpha.communicata.co.uk/nufc
Sponsored by the club mascot 'bottle of dog', the Newcastle United Official Web site is fast, fluid and the entertaining graphics will make a lot of friends in the fans forum. For a simpler view of the Magpies visit the excellent Talk of the Tyne fanzine at www.swan.co.uk/TOTT/ where one of the most popular pages is 'Lets All Laugh at Sunderland'. Boys will be boys...
Top of Page |

NBA

http://www.nba.com/
Complementary reference guide to the fast cut, slam dunk, swooshy camera shots of NBA coverage on Channel 4. This is the official yankee product with a print, cut out and keep score card for every game, so you can count the baskets as they go down. Every team in the league has its own pages with player biogs, standings and results. There's also some European round ball coverage with bits in French and Spanish. Pretty slow to load as it gets a courtload of action, but if you're into shooting hoops then it's well worth time out.
Top of Page |

Nationwide Football League

http://www.nationwide.co.uk
Its a little known fact that there are teams outside the Premier League. To tie in with sponsorship of the Football League, Nationwide's footy site carries information on all the league's 72 teams. The game results appear in real time, but full matches reports take about an hour. In addition there's a results service, a compete list of fixtures, and details of the cup competitions. However the site really needs more content to take it into the premier league of Web sites (see Internet 22, September 1996).
Top of Page |

Mudsluts

http://www.rubyslippers.com/funhouse/index2.html
This has all the attitude of an ezine although it's primarily for mountain biking junkies or 'mudsluts' in their particular parlance. Based around the bike tracks and routes of North West America it's not much use if you're off for a weekend in the Peak District, but it has an outlook, a perspective, that's as much fun to read about as it is to experience. A smart section called Techno Weenie reviews all the latest gadgets and gizmos that are bound to interest boy-obsessives (bike locks, high energy snacks, syncros crank-o-matics!) but, more generally, there's a pretty thorough list of links for all kinds of cyclists, not just those in the dirt nation.
Top of Page |

Middlesborough FC

http://www.dur.ac.uk/~d3fher/boro/boindx.html
This is a good-looking site which, unfortunately, hasn't been updated since the end of February. Coincidentally, about the time Middlesborough suffered a slump in their footie fortunes of epic proportions. Better is Red Roar, the official Middlesborough magazine, at www.hk.super.net/~tlloyd/personal/boro.html which has an IRC channel and some interesting WAV sound files.
Top of Page |

Manchester United FC

http://www.sky.co.uk/sports/manu/meta.htm
There are drop-down menus to reveal match reports and Ferguson parables but none of Cantona's metaphysical ramblings at the official Manchester United site . The site is functional rather than spectacular but there are some unique competitions like guessing who's behind the wall - a Manchester United hall of fame. Hosted by Sky, the site scores highly for being bang-on-the-ball.
Top of Page |

Liverpool FC

http://www.connect.org.uk/anfield/
The unofficial Liverpool site with by far the best links can be found at the address above. It has an excellent Bulletin Board system which professes to flame to death the occasional Manchester United devotee who wanders into the waters and has a partial mirror site at www.est.is/~jongeir/liverpoo.htm in Iceland and a rather good Norwegian site at login.nord.eunet.no/~kjello/fredrik/liverpool.html. The official Liverpool site is, curiously, the Carling Premier League site.
Top of Page |

Leicester City FC

http://severn.geog.le.ac.uk/jad7/lcfc/
Leicester have made a couple of signings over the summer none more imaginative than Bod, their animated striker. Unfortunately, the menu page of this site is by far the best part. There are links to the Leicester Mercury but my word, yawn, yawn, do they take a long time to download.
Top of Page |

Leeds United AFC

http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/users/tim/leeds/
Unfortunately, Leeds United don't seem to have entered into the spirit of Web development and have refused permission to use the crest and photographs from the matchday programme on a Web site. Tim Geldard struggles on with his unofficial site making the most of limited resources. But what we really want is Yeboah's artistry, vision and his goal against Wimbledon not pages of text. On the plus side, there's a great Earth Web chat channel for anyone to use. I even found a Manchester United fan lurking. Now that spirit of free information really should be adopted by the commercial manager at Leeds.

Internet Squash Federation

http://www.ncl.ac.uk/~npb/
This aims to be the definitive site for everything about squash - clubs, coaching, equipment, leagues, player profiles, rankings, tournaments, TV coverage and videos. It has evolved over a period of two years and so the Web site has heaps of information at its fingertips. There are bound to be plenty of business types who like to work hard, play hard and be hard, and who will love this.

Internet disc shoppe

http://www.digimark.net/disc/
Why risk your fingernails in a rough sport like rugby or strain your back over a croquet stick when you can fling one of these blighters back and forth? They're totally foolproof and available where all good ice cream is sold.
Top of Page |

Horse Country

http://www.pathology.washington.edu/Horse/Carroll_horse.html
Rather interestingly this page is the kind to spring surprises on one, collating as it does a rather bizarre and undiscriminating mix of information and resources on all kinds of horsey things. There are pages and addresses of American hunts, pony clubs, dressage associations and polo clubs in odd corners and far-flung bits of the world. A glossary of equine terms, incomprehensible oddments on horse science (which presumably means the sophisto-genetic shenanigans of breeding thoroughbreds etc), as well as some weirdy short fiction, recollections and remninisences of 'barn' smells. All in all, if you're one of the horsey set, there will definitely be something here for you, though you may have to gallop about it bit until you stumble upon something suitable. Giddiup!

Farlow's of Pall Mall

http://www.farlows.co.uk/farlows
Fish and not a little, tackle - stop sniggering at the back. Farlow's of Pall Mall has been around for 150 years and is by appointment to Prince Charles, no less. This is an exquisite Web site. Beautifully constructed and containing a history of the shop, information and pictures of the merchandise and famous people testing the goods. The site also includes extracts from Farlow's magazine, and links and addresses to associations, clubs and societies.

Faith Sloan's Bodybuilding Site

http://www.frsa.com/bbpage.shtml
Body-builder and Internet freak Faith Sloan flexes her muscles on this framed site with tiny Java sprites and gateways to knowledgable texts on nutrition, work-out techniques, and, yes fellas, a gallery of muscle-bound female Schwarzenegger. Sloan, president of a San Francisco body-building society also owns a couple of Web page design companies, but needs an imagination and design workout on these fairly dull pages.
Top of Page |

Everton FC

http://www.connect.org.uk/everton/
The official Everton site is a tad disapp- ointing. You're greeted by a toffeeman swinging his rattle and thumbnail images of 1928 cartoon characters. Unfortunately these don't translate well to the screen. Much better is Keith's Everton page at www.ma.ic.ac.uk/~km/everton/everton.htm which hopes to establish an interactive forum by the start of the season.
Top of Page |

Derby County FC

http://lard.sel.cam.ac.uk/derby_county
The Rams are in action. A hot-bed of Eastern European stars with the only link in the Premier League to the Croatian League. To establish cross-boundary footballing links there's an online form to join the RamsNet mailing list. Hopefully, this site will stay up well into next season.

Dan's World

http://web.cps.msu.edu:80/~dunhamda/dw/dansworld.html
Everything you ever wanted to know about skateboarding. A skating fool for 20 years, Dan has as keen an eye for Web page design as for boarding aerodynamics and the folly of using clay wheels. Cool pix and a drop of Java, with plenty links to FAQs, newsgroups and articles, including Dan's own personal history of obsession. For dabblers wanting to turn pro, Dan warns, Most pro skaters make less than your average receptionist and could make more waiting on tables. But how much can you can make skateboarding on tables? We should be told!

Croydon Reebok Running Sisters

Top of Page |

Coventry City FC

http://www.warwick.ac.uk/~cudbu/SkyBlues.html
Like the team, the Web site may not set the Championship alight but like Peter Ndlovu, it has some nice touches. Unfortunately nothing seems to have been added to the site since the tortuous end of last season, perhaps the nerves were a little too frayed.
Top of Page |

Chelsea FC

http://www.jack.dircon.net/chelsea/
If links are your thing, Jax's Chelsea site will be your idea of heaven. Framed off at the foot of the page are more links than you can shake a stick at. They're here, they're there, they're every-bloody-where, Chelsea links...Whether you want news, views or singing the blues it's all here. But what makes this Web site such a joy to visit is the CFC mailing list including the bitter-sweet recollections of the fans: 'was the man in the sweetshop really Chopper Harris?'
Top of Page |

CarlingNet

http://www.fa-carling.com/
Half hoping it might be a paean of praise to bumptious, bum-chinned Royal rugger bugger, Will Carling, but knowing full well it was a stats and figures footyfest of info on the Carling Premiereship, Internet has to admit that Carling has made an impressive debut for its first game out on the park. It includes fixtures, results, club records and merchandise etc but the best bit is the discussion area, which in time could become as compulsive as Danny Baker's original 6.06.
Top of Page |

British Racing Centre

http://www.racing.press.net
[racing.pcx] This site devoted to the delights of horse racing looks great, the only problem is you have to pay to get access to most of the information held on there. Form databases, breeding archives and a live news and results service are all brought to you courtesy of the sports administrators Weatherbys and the Press Association. There is a tantilising taste of information for free, such as news snippets, but to access most of the databases you need to flash the cash. A fiver a month brings you the latest news, live betting, live results and statistics while £25 a month gets you a full-form service including betting details and a breeding database. Worth a visit but only the serious form merchants will subscribe.

Britain In-Line Skating Association

http://www.demon.co.uk/nbcs/bisa.html
Official page for irritating ponces who prance around our parks on roller blades. They sneak out between parked cars wearing scrappy little shorts and crop tops and then generally arse about in an arrogant fashion. And they complain about bad press! Forgive me. I'll start again. This association presents the sensible side of a much-maligned past-time suitable for all the family, spreading news (there's now a National Skate Patrol), safety information and general loveliness about in-line skating. Most useful at the moment probably, is a list of instructors, skate friendly shops (overwhelmingly in London) and addresses of Leisure Centres and Roller Rinks (this time countrywide) where people will always be pleased to see them.

Blackburn Rovers FC

http://geocities.datacellar.net/Colosseum/4664/
Regularly updated, clean, uncluttered graphics and a damn quick server. What more could you want from a footie Web site? This non-profit-making resource is provided for Rovers fans by Rovers fans. If you want to wallow in the glory of the country's best striker, you can buy all your Shearer gear at www.reednews.co.uk/ brfc/ Sadly, that number nine shirt will now be a bit out-of-date.

Aston Villa FC

http://www.gbar.dtu.dk/~c937079/AVFC/
Updated on 15th July, accessed on 16th July, the Aston Villa site is full of newsworthy facts, figures and fantastic Java applets. Games are summarised and include hot links to the Electronic Telegraph's match reports. And with a humour section incorporating a Villa version of the Abbott and Costello sketch 'Who's on 1st?' this supporter's site has all the bases covered.

Arsenal FC

http://www-ipg.umds.ac.uk/~rw/arsenal.html
'Welcome to the Internet home of football, welcome to Arseweb' proclaims this home page. Rupert Ward's unofficial Arsenal site is crammed full of features including details on how to keep track of Arsenal games at all times. There are also dozens of QuickTime and MPEG movies showing great Arsenal moments in history, from Charlie George's 1971 FA Cup Final winner to Dennis Bergkamp's first goal for the club. Despite its name, Arseweb is an intelligent and creative site crammed full of Gooner goodies.

Adidas

http://www.adidas.com/
Rocking the original old school three stripes, Adidas isn't really about fashion its about investment and excellence in sport. Well, judging by the prosaic attitude to the shoes and sporting equipment that put in an appearance on this site it's not anyway. In principal, articles on the eclectic history of the football boot etc are a superb idea but there's something a bit too clinical about the way they are executed here. It's pretty much all the right reference points but without the intensity and passion. Having said that, Adidas has put together a very impressive Web presence including a jaunt around trainer heaven in Quicktime VR.

Where is Raleigh's history of the bicycle with snaps of bone-shakers, mumsy Shoppers and souped up 70s Choppers? Still, focusing on more current business, this is the place to catch up with the latest Team Raleigh results. It also provides a glimpse of some of the newest models and the dealers where such machines may be bought.

Lou Bignami's Fine Fishing Magazine

http://www.turbonet.com/finefish/?494,31
This is a major league magazine for anyone who has ever spent a rainy afternoon on a riverbank. Being American, it's full of funny and informative hyperbole on some of the more glam, exciting ways to catch a fish. Stuff like Bassin' the Orlando Lakes, as well as how to cook a crappie, and if you're looking for something in particular, there's always the search option. Regional reports, monster records, equipment, techniques and especially interesting species. A great catch. Don't let this one get away.

On and off road models, demos, accessories and techie engineering design, as well as a worldwide directory of the stump-jumpin'est mountain bike trails around. Punctures? Pah!

Tum Yeto Digiverse is, like, the umbrella organisation that houses a whole bunch of stuff on skaters, snowboarders, surfers and the mad things they might be into. It's divided into different ezine-like sections with articles on music, style and attitude, as well as olli-type information. It's the whole caboodle. Great pictures, great icons with some skate advertising thrown in. There's even a girlzine called Foxy! for your feminine side.

To some extent this replicates the family atmosphere that exists at football games in the States. It's pretty lively but well organised, with a special section for the kids. As well as fixtures, results and the latest news, there are areas dedicated to each club with live chat rooms and a chalkboard on which to predict who's going to win the league.

In The Back of The Net

http://www.mcewans.co.uk/football/
Football fanzine culture has been noticably absent from the Web up till now. This site, sponsored by McEwans, has links to some of the best unofficial club pages but it also has some of the sensibility of soccer mad trivia kids. Okay so it's not exactly Frank Skinner and David Baddiel or even When Saturday Comes but it's a start.

Shaolin Kung Fu

http://www.webcom.com/~shaolin/
Major league martial arts is a serious business. This site explains the basics, from the sixth century arrival at the Shaolin monastery of an Indian monk named Bodidharma to the myriad styles and what kung fu involves. All I'm saying is don't mess with the Shaolin.

The Bomber Page

http://yarra.vicnet.net.au/~georged/index.html
Unofficial home page for quite good Australian Rules Football Club, Essenden, aka The Mighty Bombers. The club is currently honouring the 'great' Dick Reynolds by forming a luncheon club in this name. Quite frankly, any team with a player called Cockatoo Collins is all right by me.

The Climbing Archive

http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/Climbing/index.html
Catering for both rads and trads, this is really a site for experienced climbers, although the glossary is great for those just starting out! The fact that it's based in the US is irrelevant (except with regard to the legal information). Otherwise, it covers everything from techniques to training, safety, equipment and climbs, including a posting from Jim and Fred with their experiences of Cheddar Gorge.

Stockdog Server

http://dauerdigs.biosci.missouri.edu/stockdog/stockdog.html
Here's a way to keep up with who's who in the (unfortunately US-only at this stage) stockdog trials. This is where the only two mammals with any mutual affection collaborate to corner a very stupid animal into an enclosure. It's then cut into disproportionate shares and eventually eaten. The ambush is appraised by the dominant species while the subordinates inspect each other's equipment. There are also some sturdy shots of startled sheep, if that's your scene.
