A Hammer Strikes

People talk
the wind blows
the air is cold
quiet
some excited
some worried
He stands there
alone
waiting for word
praying, thinking
a girl questions him
accuses him
he shakes his head
and walks away
a hammer strikes
The night clear
the gate full
he waits there
tryig to blend in
calm but nervous
the air cold
another girl sees him
accusing him again
but he shakes his head
again walking away
a hammer strikes again
He paces around
thinking
his mind confused
his heart racing
he wonders what to do
where to go
a crowd surrounds him
accusing him
anger fills him
he curses
shaking his head
denying it all
a hammer strikes
a third time
a rooster crows
he gasps
shock filling him
he runs out
racing away
crying

Voices whisper
the wind blows
the air cold
quiet
all watching
waiting
he lies there
alone
his body beaten
broken
his face bloody
a guard
grabs his arm
stretching it out
a nail placed
to his wrist
a hammer strikes
driving in the nail
he cries out
pain
agony filling him
his body shaking
death near
the guard
grabs his other arm
stretching it out
placing a nail
to the wrist
he tenses
a hammer strikes again
the nail driving in
his scream
fills the air
the crowd flinching
he gasps for air
tears pouring out
his body wracking
with pain
the guard takes his feet
placing one above the other
a nail to the ankle
he closes his eyes
a hammer strikes
a third time
the nail tearing
through his flesh
his cries echoing
through the air
he gasps for air
his arms and feet
bleeding
pain filling him
they lift him up
and leave him there
hanging
dying
crying

People whisper
the air still
the lights dim
we sit
some laughing
some cheering
I watch the screen
images across it
my mind racing
my eyes locked
I watch the scene
my eyes cloud over
a cross before me
His face, hurting,
His eyes, staring,
I blink
shaking my head
a hammer strikes
the air quiet
as people work
I watch the screen
my hands typing
a gram appears
words meet my eyes
I look around
then read
my mind racing
images fill it
my heart races
my eyes cloud over
a cross appears
He looks at me
one arm nailed down
I shake my head
my vision clearing
a hammer strikes again
the room is dark
my roommate asleep
I lie here
phone to my ear
whispering words
my heart racing
my mind filled
with pictures,
thoughts,
I whisper
my vision clouds
a cross appears
He watches
His arms nailed down
I shake my head
the picture fades
a hammer strikes
a third time
my body stiffens
my heart aches
I whisper again
and hang up the phone
my hands over my mouth
my eyes closed
my soul crying out
I see the cross
I see Him
hanging there
sorrow wracks my body
as I lie here
crying
