2b Transition Metals
Name | Symbol | Atomic number | Atomic weight | Boiling point | Melting Point | Density |
Zinc | Zn | 30 | 65.38 | 907 C | 420 C | 7.13 g/cm3 |
Cadmium | Cd | 48 | 112.2 | 767 C | 321 C | 8.65 g/cm3 |
Mercury | Hg | 80 | 200.6 | 357 C | -39 C | 13.55 g/cm3 |
notes:
The element Zinc is used to coat steel objects to prevent rust(the Zinc corrodes first), and in Zinc-Carbon batteries.
Cadmium is used in many photo-resistive cells, and can be extremely poisonous.
Mercury is the only metal that is liquid at room temperature, and readily forms highly poisonous compounds with organic substances. It is often used in barometers, and in some thermometers.
