Chapter 1 The first omens and portents that announced the comming of the Spaniards.
The native documents that appear in the thirteen first chapters of this book include facts happened from shortly before the arrival of the Spaniards at the coasts of the Gulf of Mexico, to the final scene, Mexico-Tenochtitlan in the hands of the conquerors.
The two last chapters, the 14 and 15 offer as a conclusion, the story of the conquest, written in 1528 by several anonymous informants of Tlatelolco, as well as a few famous examples of icnocuícatl, "Sad Songs" of the conquest.
The texts are ordered based on the chronological sequence of the facts and actions of the conquest, some testimonies present some variations or divergences. Without trying to solve here the historical problems that raise such variants, what interests us fundamentally is the human value of the texts, that reflect, more clearly than the historical facts, the way in which the Nahua Indians of diverse cities and origins saw them and interpreted them.
