PRACTICAL BUDDHISM—Mangalasutta

Some claim that Buddhism is a religion of extreme renunciation, unfitted to deal with the affairs of practical worldly life. But the Buddha taught that salvation could be won in the world and while assuming all the responsibilities of a worldly man. When asked, "What is the highest blessing?" part of His answer was as follows:

"To support father and mother,

To maintain wife and child,

To be engaged in blameless occupations,

This is the highest blessing."
