Kempsey's history begins with a Roman
presence, shown by Roman gold. Kempsey is named after a Saxon chief called 'Kemys'. It is described in The Domesday Book and was visited by Royalty. The village was involved in the Civil War, has ghosts, was a centre for illegal hallucinogenic tobacco growing, and has been the scene of a duel, a beheading, social revolution and robbery by highwayman Dick Turpin. Kempsey residents have gone all over the world, including on the Mayflower and to Kempsey, Australia.
