The 2001 Census states:

Resident Population
In mid 1998, 3,900 people lived in Kempsey of which 19 per cent were aged under 16, 54 per cent were aged between 16 and 59, and 27 per cent were aged 60 and over.

A total of 44 live births to mothers usually resident in Kempsey and 53 deaths of residents of the ward were registered in 1998. These represented crude rates of 11 births and 14 deaths per thousand residents compared with 9 and 13 respectively across the whole of Malvern Hills.

Health
In May 1998, 2 per cent of the resident population of Kempsey received Disability Living Allowance. This is a benefit payable to people who are disabled, and need help with personal care, getting around or both, before the age of 65. Within Kempsey, the proportion of people receiving Attendance Allowance in May 1998 was 3 per cent. Attendance Allowance is a benefit paid to people over the age of 65 who are so severely disabled, physically or mentally, that they need supervision or a great deal of help with personal care.

Employment, income support, students and qualifications
Within Kempsey, the average Key Stage 2 score for primary school pupils was 4 in 1998. Key Stage 2 tests are taken by children at age 11 and have a target level of 4. In August 1998, there were a total of 15 Jobseeker Allowance claimants in Kempsey of which 67 per cent have child dependants. In September 1998 there were 800 employee jobs in Kempsey. In August 1998 there were 155 Income Support claimants in Kempsey. This represents 4 per cent of the resident population aged 16 or over.
