The story centers around Emma Simpson and her Southern family. In her diary, Emma tells about the invents that happen around her.
Emma has to deal with her dangerously sick mother, helpful aunt, and cousin, who is going crazy. Through it all she manages to write in her diary, telling how it all happens.
As it was in So Far From Home, this diary also has an authentic look. The ribbon is a must have accessory, and the pages are wonderful, with their rough edges. The texture of the book makes it more believable and fun to read.
Barry Denenberg, the author, tells an accurate description of how the Civil War might have been for some people. You learn and have fun with this book at the same time.
