Delaware cap, c. 1860 Canadian Delaware (?) Hide, porcupine quill, cotton (?) thread, sequins. This is a fine, but rare, example of Northeastern beadwork. The presence of a sequin indicates an Iroquois influence, suggesting that the cap is from Ontario where Delawares lived alongside the Iroquois at Six Nations and other locales. Delaware beaded woman's cape is made from trade cloth and Czechoslovakian original trade beads. This piece was collected by Helen Shepard in the 1930's and was owned by the Barrett family of Northfield, MA. The original tag bearing the known owner history remains attached. The cape comes with a 2001 appraisal that includes photos and description. It is described as, "Museum quality with no damage and very rare." The intricate bead work is exceptional. The back of the cape has slight discoloration around the edges which would be considered age appropriate and from being worn. The cape dates circa 1830. It measures 26" at the widest part and is 16" from top to bottom.

This men's beaded breechcloth is beaded with seed and tubular beads on navy blue wool, bound with red silk. 16"L x 12"W. 2 panels, the front panel only beaded in a floral pattern. Rear wool panel attached to front with black hemtape(?), stretchy-type material. Condition: good with normal wear, small holes to wool, old repair to silk binding with old black linen thread. Estimated age: circa 1880-1900. Tribal origin: Prairie region, Oto, Osage, Delaware, Kickapoo
