My interest in Jewish history in Spain in Medieval times had a slow start but in reading about the period it sparked a great interest. This period for the Jews in Europe was a paradise. Arts, sciences, Jewish scholarship all florished. The Jews held many ositions of secular power. In a twisted way, the expulsion of the Jews from Spain helped spread the Rennaisance through europe. At this time I do Celtic living history (at MTA my group will be portraying Iberian Celts in Hannabal's army). I also do 15th c ntury, Buckskinners (colonial mountain men), viking and war of 1812.

It is indeed fascinating, isn't it?! Maybe you can do some Sephardic portrayals soon! - Chaiya

Great site, will visit again. Interesting read to recommend to all interested in medieval Spain...THE LIONS OF AL-RASSAN by FF author Guy Gavriel Kay. Critics say it is more history than fantasy and covers (thinly veiled) the Spanish Reconquista era "an exhilarating epic adventure of fierce passions, divided loyalties and tribal war" (HarperCollins). I promise you it will fascinate affectionados of the period in history we all seem to love.

I am curious about the Jews of Spain since my family on my father's side is known to have come from Spain but went into exile to Italy in 1492 near the town of Arezzo in Tuscany. It was a geographicaly remote area in the mountains that provided a natural fortress against invaders. Many of my grandfathers, so to speak, were rabbis and scholars. I am not sure if they practiced their religion openly or if they were secretive or if they eventualy assumed a public role as Christians. I would love to know mo e about my heritage. I do know that the mountain on which they settled became known in the region as "The Mountain of the Hebrews" and there may exist an ancient map somewhere indicating that. Over time the name became corrupted and the Italians sort of intentionaly altered it. My oldest ancestor in that region was apparently awarded a parcel of land by the ruling aristocrat at that time and place which was an entire county, therefore, he was declared a Count. I mention this only because this fact may e significant in my attempts to trace my ancestory. It might mean there is a better chance of locating records if my ancestor were a man of some prominence or reknown. I do believe he was a rabbi. My immediate Grandfather came to America from Italy in the early 1900's as a poor immigrant but he was a scholarly man and had been a teacher in Italy. He arrived in America with little worldly possessions other than trunks, and trunks of books that were very important to him, his wife and his 6 year old son Abramo, who was my father. Most of his books were subsequently lost in a fire in an attic where he had stored them and I don't think my grandfather nor my father ever fully recovered from that loss. I would just love to know all that I can about my heri age and particularly, my Grandfather.

This time of co-existance and flowering of the descendants of Abraham.(Muslim,Christian and Jew) I am a Christian and I like the writtings of Maimonides (The RAMBAM) As well I like the writings of Anasari the Muslim. For me ritings of the RAMBAM show him to be the Mozart of Philosophy. Without the supporting culture he could not have added to the quilt of human understanding of Godly wisdom. I really enjoyed your site. I enjoy Andalusian history and love Sephardi/Ladino and Andalusian music (Recommendation: a CD "Anals del Agua" by Catalan singer Maria del Mar Bonet.) I'm a Palestinian Christian. I have personally experienced a great deal of suffering under Israeli occupation-- including imprisonment without trial. But I am a strong advocate of Arab-Jewish co-existence. For this reason, I'm fascinated by the Muslim- ewish-Christian convivencia in Spain, and also Arab-Jewish relations during the period of the Crusades. (Another recommendation: Check out a novel by Tariq Ali, The Book of Saladin. It is a historical novel about Muslims and Jews during the perio of the Crusades.)
