UNBOUNDED GOD
Thaddeus Trenn, written April 5, 1990
If you were God, could love each lonely heart
the lost -- as He, without regard to any cost
so loved them all just as they were
you'd dare to hope one day they'd wake
to see the loving works you make
(perhaps e'en love you in return -- well, just a bit)
yet not because you need their love, but simply your own love abounds!
You'd know their sails must open wide to catch your gaze -- and wider still
because it can't fulfill, let bloom those flower petals to true joy
like sunshine does on lily field when glowing rays are unobscured --
prefer to wave in darkened days? such flora dies when hid, apart
it cannot grow without that radiance from above --
so also with Creator's love --
we shrivel up, to dust return who fail to open unto Love
If you were God observing thus encrusted ones
in darkness deep, unwilling to allow, accept
the light of love each one did need
to live and grow, to blossom forth --
If you were God and saw this state perhaps you'd shed a tear or two
yet helpless what else could you do except to love the insolent
to hope, expect free change of heart
they'd turn, awaken, catch your light
and learn of you, your humble might
that you depend on creatures still if they accept as is their will
the love you bear to each and all!
The saddest thing you'd have to live
is see that love these need, you give freely, open, not received --
love gone awry distresses so --
you'd see it often turned away without recourse, naught you could say
or do! except to love them more --
that's how 'twould be if you were God.
