Why not direct democracy?
The framers of the Constitution felt very strongly that a
direct democracy was not practical.
Why Not??
It would be very time consuming to get the opinion
and/or vote of all citizens on every issue.
In 1787, the United States was a predominantly rural
country without a reliable means of communication for
all.
Framers did not trust the intelligence of the average
American to make educated opinions about politics.
