Criticism of the Australian Prime Minister's choice for Governor General is unfounded; it is based on the same misunderstanding that leads people to become republicans.

It is the system consitutional monarchy that enables the system to evolve. The office of governor general is unpolitical and unbiased. For all I know, Sir William Dean is a rabbi; I have no idea what any of the former governor generals did for a living, nor do I care. Why? I am not required to elect them and I am confident that they current system will lead to an appropriate selection. We have enough elections in the country already.

A preference for an elected politician as governor general is dangerous. Politicians are like dogs. They lick the bums of whoever is handy and other dirty things. People who lick the best are the ones who get elected.
