Welcome to my unofficial Scots in Melbourne site

Highland Clearings Led to Mass Emigration

Scots fled oppression in the UK to many parts of the world. Since the 1800s, Scots have brought their influence to Melbourne. This influence included a variety of commerical and social practices that are largely based on high moral standards. These were reflected in the institutions that remain to this day in Melbourne and other places.

Presbyterianism

Each Presbyterian has an individual right to hold and to express contrary opinions. Both The Westminster Confession of Faith and Calvinism are foundations of Presbyterianism and these guide thinking Presbyterians to behave according to issues as they arise; helpful standards in turbulent times. Some Presbyterians have altered the Westminster Confession of Faith to reflect more sensible contemporary situations.

It is important to understand that, while Calvinism is a form of Protestantism, Calvin's intention was to work within the framework of the Church of Rome and "common unity" of all Christians was part of his objective. Furthermore, Presbyterians are Catholic or universal, which they acknowledge in the Apostles Creed.

During the 1800s, Victorian parliament was composed of a high proportion of Scots, who attended a Presbyterian Church in East Melbourne. This influence was spread all over the State of Victoria; my great-great-grandfather was the Precentor at the Ballarat Presbyterian Church.

When in Melbourne, I attend The Scots' Church Melbourne. It was built (by the father of Dame Nellie Melba) to be the most beautiful building in Australia. It is a wonderful place to worship God. The congregation perpetuates many features that Scots have spread over the face of the earth.

Caledonianism - of ancient Scotland

Many Caledonian traditions have continued in Melbourne. For example, the Kirkin of the Tartins is held annually at Scots Church in Melbourne. Highland games are held during summer months in various Melbourne suburbs.

Victorian Scottish Regiment

The Caledonian culture, being strong in Melbourne, led to the formation of the Victorian Scottish Regiment (VSR). Although this has been suppressed and veiled under a variety of aliases, their Pipes and Drums continue to represent the spirit of that strong Caledonian spirit. The Colours of this Regiment are laid up in Scots' Church. The VSR is affiliated with the Gordon Highlanders, London Scottish Regiment, The Toronto Scottish Regiment, the 48th Highlanders of Canada, and the Cape Town Highlanders.

Freemasonry

While this is not always favoured by contemporary Scots, at the heart of Caledonianism and mixed with the heritage of Presbyterianism is a strong influence of Freemasonry. The oldest continuing Lodge in the world is said to be at Kilwining. With the exodus of Scots came the spread of Freemasonry; a system of morality veiled in alegory and illustrated by symbols.
