[Zeus] setting us on the road Made this a valid law-- "That men must learn by suffering." Drop by drop in sleep upon the heart Falls the laborious memory of pain. Against one's will comes wisdom. The grace of the gods is forced on us: Throned invoilably.

Introduction

As an Associate Professor of English and Literature at Palomar College in San Marcos, California, I have found my teaching centering more and more on what one former student has dubbed the Olde Stuffe. I had done my graduate work in Anglo-Saxon and the High Medieval periods, but increasingly my own ongoing education has reached back in the known roots of literature and civilization. Hence, I have adopted the motto: The further I go, the backer I get.

I branched back into the Classics and developed the Introduction to Classical Mythology course (at least, as it now stands) offered by the English Department. The Classical theme, therefore, seemed appropriate for the start of my WebPage. Thus, we begin our Greek Odyssey.

Ancient City of Athens

While I have always been interested in Classical Mythology and devoured my Classic Comics and children's versions of the legends with all the enthusiasm of any child, my interest was whetted even further by travel. I was raised in a military home which saw much uprooting and re-settling. Thus, travel was--in a very real sense--in the marrow of my bones. On my own since about sixteen or seventeen, I have been able to stash away pennies and pence sometimes quite literally in former peanut butter jars to satisfy my one true indulgence: travel. Sometimes it has been well planned in advance, and sometimes it has been on the spur of the moment; but the backpack is always handy, the passport up-to-date, and the spare toothbrush to hand. I have had wonderful experiences and adventures while traveling. The result has been mutually beneficial: the love of literature sparking the interest in travel, the travel reinforcing the love of literature. But beyond doubt, one of the most dramatic moments I have ever experienced was looking out the coach window and, as we rounded a bend, seeing the Acropolis standing in white majesty, still the protector of greater Athens. It was breathtaking.
