The spring is here, in the area of the Mediterranean, the deep spring of a higher spirit to which our civilization is referred.(...)Cleveland, Stockholm, Cracovia or Kiev think about Venice, Constantinople, Alexandria, Rome, Athens as the desire of escape, the going-away to the sunny beaches of a happy sea; but don't they also desire, consciously or not, to return at some time to this spring, to these fertile lands, where as we know from our childhood, demigods were having a less flat and less crude life. Perfect people that were speaking a better language and had a good sense for right analogies. When we dream about the perfection of the Human, the proudness of being human, our sight turns towards the Mediterranenan.
Georges Duby (from the Book: La Mediteranee, les hommes et l'heritage, Ed. Flammarion)
