Scores of folks make their home in the woods and abandoned property of Bloomington. These homeless folks often live right next to vibrant, clean neighborhods. Others live near railroad tracks and seldom-used dirt roads. A story about Bloomington's downtrodden.

Soup kitchens

Running a soup kitchen is not a picnic. Organization and planning are vital. The most important, thing, though, is maintaining constant funding.

Assaults on the rise

Bloomington Police report that assaults with a deadly weapon are on the rise. Recently, two different IU students were assaulted early on a Sunday morning by a white male with with pistol. Police caution students not to walk alone at night.

Tutoring

The First Baptist Church has decided to start an after-school program for high school students from Bloomington's poorest nieghborhoods. Volunteers from the church's youth group will help disadvantaged students with their homework and SAT I preparation.

Salvation Army

Goodwill Industries

The Industries of the Blind give those on a tight budget an opportunity to shop for substantial bargains. The store on South Walnut Street hopes to expand.



Indian students help with quake relief

A sizable number of IU's Indian students recently spent a Saturday helping to raise money for relief in the western Indian state of Gujarat, which was hit by a massive quake in January.
