This is Cougar country
Bloomington High School North has a proud boys'
basketball tradition. The 4-A Cougars won the last single-class state
championship in the history of Indiana high school basketball in 1997.
Three members of that team played in the
Indiana-Kentucky all-star games and went onto college careers. They
included
Duany Duany, now at Wisconsin; Kueth Duany, now at Syracuse; and Djibril
Kante, now at Indiana State.
The Cougars have an incredible 100-13 record over the
last five seasons and are eyeing another IHSAA title.
The current team features Jared Jeffries, considered
one of the five best high school players in the country. Jeffries, who
signed with Indiana University in November, was recently featured in
an article in Sports Illustrated as the magazine's athlete of the
month. The 6-foot-9, 215-pound Jeffries is a top candidate for
the 1999-2000 Mr. Basketball. IU won a competitive recruiting war over
Duke to win Jeffries' services for the next four years. He averaged 23.5
points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game last season and was named
all-state. He's averaging 25.8 ppg as a senior. He set the school
record for points in a game with 42 against Owen Valley Jan. 28. The
versatile Jeffries plays both inside and outside for the
Cougars. He wears jersey No. 35.
The Cougars are coached by Tom McKinney, who played
a year at Indiana for Branch McCracken. McKinney graduated form IU in 1970 and received his master's degree in 1975. He teaches U.S. history at North. The former Columbus High School basketball player is one of the most
respected coaches in Indiana. His teams are known for their defensive
prowess.
Other outstanding players include sophomore center Sean
May, senior power forward Mike Bridgewaters, senior guard Matt Kalua,
junior guard Scott May, junior guard Kelvin Boatner and freshman guard
Errek Suhr.
