Germanic Runes - Number 1

by
Erik Oosterwal

Here is a cryptogram based on the old Germanic Runic alphabet sometimes called the Elder Futhark.  If you are familiar with runes, this shouldn't be difficult to figure out, but if you are new to the runic alphabet try seeing if you can figure it out before looking online for a phonetic translation.

A hint for beginners:  Not all of the letters used in the English language are present in the Runic alphabet, so their phonetic sound is approximated using multiple letters, and in some words with repeating letters only one letter is used.  For instance, in the word 'letters', only one 't' would be used.  Also, words can break across lines without hyphens.

Below, if you are successful in deciphering the alphabet and phonetic spelling, you will find a quote by a famous person.

Have fun, and good luck!
