THE BEST LINKS ON THE WEB

AMERICA

Ancestral Social Security Death Index
This is a great source for finding a relative in the U.S.A. if you know they were still alive after the Social Security started. If you have a rough idea of the birth date this will help. From the listing you will get a town or state of their last residence and a death date. (Railroad employees after 1936 with ss numbers beginning with digits 700-729 who qualified for a pension from the railroad retirement board will not be listed on social security death index. Researchers can write to: Railroad Retirement Board, 844 Rush St, Chicago, IL 60611).

Brenda's PA Genealogy Links
This is a great link for people researching in the state of Pennsylvania.

Family Search
LDS has now got it's Ancestral database online for you to search. You will find many options for searching their databases. This web site has been in great demand and overloaded so please use off peak times for your research.

Mark and Cyndi's Family Tree
Cyndi has I think the largest genealogy links page on the internet. The only draw back is the way the home pages are listed .

The Surname Web
This is a great place to search for personal home pages as they are listed by the surnames being researched.

ENGLAND

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission
For those who are reasearching their ancestors who died in the Commonwealth Forces during the First and Second World Wars. This web site will tell you where they are buried/memorial and in some cases family information and where they were from etc. Since this site opened they have been updating and changing data to help make the searching easier. I suggest trying this site on an unpeak time so you will not be disappointed, keeping in mind the time zones.

Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites for England
If you are looking for a certain link this is the place to go.

Family Search
Great news the LDS in Utah, U.S.A. has finally put the IGI on the web. This web sites demand for searching their database needless to say has been in great demand. Their web page has been updated late last year 2000 and the search system changed to the following: To search the IGI click on the SEARCH tab at top of page, then click on IGI on left side bar. After filling out the name etc. make sure you select British Isles under REGION box (arrow down) then under COUNTRY box select England, then in COUNTY box select which county, before you click on search. Try off peak times like during the week America day time hours. Please keep in mind that LDS has not had access to all church records since they did the IGI. However, there are a number of church records now released by the diocese in the last 10 years to the Devon Record Office that have not been logged by the LDS. May be if enough people nicely ask the LDS for their volunteers to update the old records to 1899 and put on film new church records to their database this might get accomplished.

Genealogy Mailing Lists for U.K.
This is great place to subscribe free and place an enquirey with the county list or to the surname list. It's worth going to look and see what lists they have before you subscribe. (The Devon list is very helpful for those of you who are interested in placing any type of genealogy enquirey).

1901 Census
The census web page opened on January 2, 2002 and crashed the same day. The census today now works fine but some advise for people using the census for the first time. Make a list of at least seven or more people you wish to search for with their ages and place born if you have them . If you want to see the census entry in order to see other family members you will pay a minimum fee of five pounds but you can download six census pages.
