Friday May 23rd, the last day of the Devon County Show at Barnstaple, and the weather conditions were most disappointing. A thick misty rain enveloped the district in the early morning, and naturally the attendance was affected in consequence. Special interest attached to the day's programme from the local point of view by reason of the fact that the prizes offered by the Barnstaple Local Committee were competed for. The principal items in the day's proceedings were the award of the President's Cup, given by the Right Hon. Lord Clinton, for jumping, and those given by the Mayor of Barnstaple (Councillor F.A. Jewell), for the best horse and beast in the show, the property of residents in the union districts of Barnstaple, Bideford, South Molton, and Torrington.
Dawlish
Through the initiative of Mr. F.G. Avant (Chairman of the Dawlish District Council), the Empire Day festivities at Dawlish were resuscitated on Saturday. Four hundred and twenty children assembled and marched the lawn, where the four flags were, in order, formed by the children, including a Union Jack. Whilst the children were assembled on the lawn, a salute of 21 guns was fired, and then the Union Jack was unfuried by the little son of Mr. Avant. After an appropriate address by Mr. Avant, buns and chocolates were distributed to the children, and sports followed, Mr. J.H. Lamacraft acting as hon. secretary. He was assisted by Messrs. F. Lear, M.C. Bolt, G.H. Cox, E.A. Borden, H.S. Loram, J. Shapter, W.T. Leaman, C. Easterbrook, J.W. Rookes, T. and F.H. Shapter, E.H. Soper, M. Perkins, S.F.C. Churchward (surveyor), P. Yelland and H.C. Coleman. A promenade concert by the Town Band in the evening concluded a successful day. Interested spectators during the afternoon were Captain and Mrs. E.F. John Stevens, formerly a farmer of Ashford, near Barnstaple, was arrested at Holsworthy on Friday for failing to keep his bail to appear last year at the Devon Assize, and was by Mr. F. A. Jewell, at the Barnstaple County Police Court, on Friday, again committed to the Assizes, bail being refused. (*Barnstaple, Pg.2)
At Brixham Police Court on Friday May 23-Charles Cumming, of Station-steps, was, on the evidence of P.C. Hurved, fined 2 shillings 6 pence, for having his chimney on fire on the 4th inst.-Edward G. Norris, diver, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly, on the 14th inst. P.C. Hart proved the case, and defendant was fined 7 shillings six pence. inclusive. (*Brixham, Pg.2)
At Torquay Police Court yesterday (May 26th), a labourer named Edward Samuel Rockett was summoned for being 1 pound 10 shillings in arrears on an industrial school order. A warrant for payment was made. (* Torquay, Page 2)
At Torquay Police Court a charge of alleged theft was preferred against a stranger named Percy Dawe yesterday (May 26th). Detective Potter said the accused stole a purse the property of Elizabeth Moss, of Chelston, Torquay. Prisoner was remanded. (*Torquay, Page 2)
DARTMOUTH
About 1,400 tons of clay was shipped from Teignmouth on Saturday per the "Dashwood" and "Jas O'Leill," both for Glasgow; 'Irish Ministrel" and "Britannic." both for Antwerp; the French Schooner "Cyrano" for Gijon; and the "Brackenholm," for Leith. The "Mizpah" and the "Sunbeam" both came from Dartmouth to load.
