VAMPIRES IN THE CINEMA


Every year, all over the world, there are vampire films being made. It's impossible to keep up with them all, but fortunately there are a number of books available that can help.

The last entry in this section is not about the cinema, but about Dracula the play.


HOLLYWOOD GOTHIC by David Skal. W.W. Norton and Co. 1990. ISBN 0-393-02904-2.
Probably the two most influential events in the modern history of the vampire are Stoker's book and the 1931 film starring Bela Lugosi. This book provides a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at Dracula, the early plays, the film Nosferatu which infringed on Stoker's copyright, and finally the 1931 film starring Bela Lugosi.

Provides plotlines, actor, director, etc information for a very large number of domestic and foreign films from 1896 to 1992.

Considerable information and interesting analysis of the early days of Dracula plays and films, as well as other vampire films.


VAMPIRE MOVIES by Robert Marrero. Fantasma Books. 1994. ISBN 0-9634982-3-1
In-depth detail and loads of photos of many vampire films from the 1920's to the 1990's.

The script of the most famous plays based on Stoker's Dracula. Also includes lots of photos and additional information.


BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA: THE FILM AND THE LEGEND by Francis Ford Coppola and James Hart. Newmarket Press.1992. ISBN 1-55704-139-3 Contains everything you ever wanted to know about the behind the scenes story of the film. Information on the actors, director, producer, costuming, and some fascinating information on historical film making. Also includes wonderful photos.
