. . . designed to incorporate the wisdom and beauty of
Ojibwa heritage
with the knowledge and skills of
our modern technological society
Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College serves approximately 400 full-time
and part-time students each academic year. The college draws its main body of
students from the Lac Courte Oreilles Reservation which is located in the
northern lakes and woodlands region of Wisconsin approximately 150 miles
northeast of Minneapolis and 80 miles southeast of Duluth.
The college is an agency of the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior
Chippewa Indians and derives its authority from the sovereignty and
constitution of the tribe.
History
The Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Tribe, recognizing its responsibilities for
the higher education of Tribal members, drafted a Tribal resolution in August
of 1982 initiating the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College to
encourage the personal and intellectual development of students. The purpose
of the college is to analyze community educational and training needs and
to custom-design curriculum at the post-secondary educational level that
incorporates traditional Ojibwa heritage and values. Educational and
training services will be provided to the members of the Lac Courte Oreilles
Tribe and other interested individuals for the benefit of the academic,
economic, and cultural needs of the general community in which the Lac
Courte Oreilles Reservation is located.
