Children are often very sensitive and receptive to Reiki energy. Babies and small children absorb energy much more quickly than adults, so treatment time will be shorter. Babies usually enjoy Reiki and are calmed by it. If energy work is being done anywhere in the house, small children will often sense it and come running! Older children who are familiar with Reiki will often ask for it when they are hurt or feeling ill. They may also offer to give you Reiki when you are not feeling well.
You may wish to ask a Reiki practitioner to treat your child, or you may be interested in being attuned to Reiki so that you can treat your child-- or yourself-- as the need arises. Traditionally, very high fees were charged for Reiki attunements. Although some teachers continue to charge high fees, many teachers now believe that there is a desperate need for Reiki in the world. These individuals are dedicated to helping to fill that need, and will sometimes teach classes and pass attunements for lower fees, love offerings, or even at no charge. When seeking a Reiki teacher or practitioner, check with natural food stores and new age bookstores. Some wholistic practitioners, such as massage therapists and chiropractors, use Reiki as a part of their healing work.
Although a number of different systems of Reiki exist, it is most often taught in a series of three levels, or "degrees". At each level, students receive attunements, or energy transfers, which enable life force energy to flow through them. In the first degree, students learn to lay their hands on themselves or another person to transmit healing energy. In the second degree, students gain the ability to channel a higher level of energy, to send healing across distance, and to use several Reiki symbols. In the third, or master level, the Reiki practitioner reaches a still higher level of healing ability, and is now able to teach Reiki and pass attunements to others.
The Reiki Handbook (Larry Arnold and Sandy Nevius) offers suggestions for healing various disorders, including allergies, bedwetting, brain damage, colic, congenital defects, earaches, and learning and memory problems.
