Each of us is born into our family. Unlike friendships and lovers, where we have a choice, we don't have a say about the family we get. This page will make the assumption that you wouldn't be here if you weren't concerned about your family.
Many families have problems:
- Many parents see children as small adults, and expect them to act that way.
- Parenting takes time and energy. Some parents have trouble meeting their child's needs and their own.
- Some parents judge their family against an imaginary perfect family.
- Many parents are unsure of their parenting skills. Each family problem is seen as a personal failure to them.
- Everyday struggles, involving work, illness, money problems, can also build up and affect the family.
- When a parent is having a problem they tend to lash out at their children.
- If a parent is depressed life can seem hopeless and it can weaken their will to work, to care for others, even to live.
- Illness can affect how a parent treats others.
- Parents often play favor for one child without realizing.
Some ways to cope with your family:
- Recognize your feelings- this is a first step in gaining control over them.
- Try to notice issues, even times of the day that tend to lead to trouble.
- Find an outlet for your frustration (call a friend, play a sport, read a book).
- Be patient...learning to deal with your feelings takes time.
- Ask for help!
